Shakyo (copying sutras) is a traditional practice in which Buddhist scriptures are carefully copied, character by character.
Historically performed as a form of prayer and spiritual training, it has now become popular both in Japan and "abroad as a calming, meditative experience".
Places where you can experience sutra copying are primarily found at highly spiritual temples, such as Kyoto (around Kenninji and Kiyomizu-dera), home to many Zen temples; Nara (Todaiji and Kofuku-ji), the birthplace of Japanese Buddhism; Kamakura's Zen culture; Mount Koya, a sacred site of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism; and Zenkoji Temple (Nagano), which has welcomed pilgrims for many years.
Shakyo is a uniquely Japanese cultural experience that allows you to pause and reflect on your journey in between sightseeing.
