Koyasan, founded in the 9th century by Kobo Daishi, is the mountaintop center of Shingon Buddhism and a gateway to the Kumano pilgrimage. Pilgrims often began here, seeking enlightenment before heading to Kumano for renewal. Walking among towering cedars, exploring temple complexes, and joining monks in meditation or prayers brings a profound sense of Japan’s sacred mountains. |
- Kongobu-ji Temple – Main temple with beautiful painted screens and large rock garden; Okunoin
Cemetery – Serene forest path of stone memorials to Kobo Daishi’s mausoleum;
- Danjo Garan – First temple complex established by Kobo Daishi.

From Koyasan, continue into the Kumano region. A gentle forest walk along the old pilgrimage path brings you to Kumano Hongu Taisha, the spiritual heart of Kumano. The shrine represents renewal and rebirth, while nearby Yunomine Onsen offers relaxation just as it did for pilgrims centuries ago. |
